When little Salman Khan unknowingly set Rs. 750 worth of currency notes on fire

Salman Khan today is one of the biggest superstars of Bollywood, not just for his massy image on screen, but also for his conscientious side. And author Sanjukta Nandy in her book ‘Khantastic – The Untold Story of Bollywood’s Trio’ has revealed that he got this aspect inculcated in him thanks to his father and certain experiences of his childhood.

When little Salman Khan unknowingly set Rs. 750 worth of currency notes on fire

Salman Khan, as is common knowledge, was born on December 27, 1965 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. His early days in Indore were spent with his cousins, climbing trees, plucking fruits and cycling. He became an expert cyclist as he could ride through stony paths and even balance it on stairs. Later, he moved to Mumbai and here’s where he did something that he majorly repented.

It was the night of the festival of Diwali and Salman and his siblings were rolling up paper and setting it on fire, imagining to be crackers. Soon, they ran out of paper and they didn’t know where to get more of it. This is when Salman Khan thought of a plan. He went to his father, writer Salim Khan’s study, opened the drawer, took out a bundle of paper and gave it to his siblings to burn it. What Salman Khan didn’t know was that the bundle of paper he and his siblings set fire to was his father’s entire salary of Rs. 750!

In no time, Salim Khan realized that his entire salary has been used up as Diwali crackers. Any other parent in Salim saab’s place would have meted out strict punishment to the kids. Instead, he explained to them their mistake patiently and also emphasized on the importance of money and how it is the means to get food at home. Salman Khan, the eldest of the siblings, it is said, was deeply impacted by his father’s teachings that night and he promised never to forget it.

Salman Khan’s philanthropic work is known and ‘Being Human’ today is one of his biggest contributions to society. Recently, he also won hearts when it came to light that he’ll financially support 25,000 daily wage workers from the film industry, after work stopped due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Sanjukta Nandy reveals in the book that he has always been so large-hearted, even as a kid. She narrates how one day the principal of his school, St Stanislaus High School, Bandra, asked the students for an unusual favour. He asked each one of the kids of well-to-do families to take one of the underprivileged students of the class for a meal home, so that they could experience family warmth and a good food. Little Salman, without even a second of hesitation, came forward and became the first one in the school to do so. The principal had asked for just one poor student to be taken home. He, however, took home seven of his classmates not just for a day but he did that on a regular basis.

Thankfully, even his family was as large-hearted as the superstar. They were more than happy to welcome these kids and feed them. Salim Khan always believed in the joy of giving and it is evident that Salman has taken this teaching of his father to another level with his noble deeds!

Ramanand Sagar’s son Moti Sagar overwhelmed with the response after re-telecast of Ramayan

Moti Sagar is in a state of disbelief at the impact that the re-telacast of his illustrious father Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan has had on the currently quarantined nation 33 years after it was first telecast.

Ramanand Sagar's son Moti Sagar overwhelmed with the response after re-telecast of Ramayan

Ramanand Sagar’s son Moti Sagar, who co-directed  the serial, says he recalls every incident from the shooting of the Ramayan as though it was yesterday. “Ramayan changed our lives. It’s not as  if my father had done no significant work before Ramayan. He had directed pathbreaking films like Paigham, Ghunghat, Zindagi, Aarzoo, Aankhen, Lalkaar and Geet. In fact, he started as the screenplay and dialogue writer of Raj Kapoor Saab’s Barsaat in 1949. He had an impressive body of work in cinema that would have ensured a name for him in cinema history. But then, at the end of his career, he decided to change his destiny.”

Moti still remembers when the patriarch of the Sagar family gathered the family members to make the announcement. “Papaji said he is making the Ramayan. He said it is something he was born to do in life. Actually, when he had fallen ill with tuberculosis, a face-reader had told him he would do something towards the end of his life that would change his destiny.”

So what was the family’s reaction to the announcement? “We always treated Papaji as the voice of authority. Although he didn’t force any of us to join him to make Ramayan, all he said was he was making the Ramayan and those members of the family who wanted to join him were welcome to do so. We all moved with him to Umbergaon in Gujarat to shoot Ramayan and Umbergaon became our home for the next two years. My brothers Subhash, Prem and Anand were there too hands-on shooting at an abandoned studio in Umbergaon which we revived. For two years, we lived and breathed only the Ramayan. We did nothing else except sleep for a few hours. We shot for eighteen hours every day. We had the most dedicated team of technicians and actors. Arun Govil became Ram, Dipika became Sita, Arvind Trivedi was Ravan, and Dara Singhji was only Hanuman in the public’s mind for the rest of his life and even today so many years after his death.”

Moti Sagar admits he and the family were taken aback by the impact of Ramayan. “Wherever my father went, people touched his feet, treated him as  someone who had brought God into their lives.  You know, back then being religious and devout was not a compulsion. It was a voluntary and totally instinctive impulse. So the impact of  the Ramayan and the reverence it generated came from a place of complete sincerity. We all believed in the words and teachings of the Ramayan. I believe the series worked because it was born out of a complete faith in the source material. That faith connected with the audience.”

Moti Sagar feels it would be impossible to do the same Ramayan in today’s times. “We made it under no pressure. There was zero interference from Doordarshan. Later, we tried doing something similar with other channels. But, it didn’t work. There  was too much interference. Something like Ramayan just happens once. It cannot be done again.”

Moti says he is delighted that the family’s most prized output has come to the nation’s rescue. “I am so happy and delighted the our serial is being so avidly watched again after 33 years. Today, people don’t have to make an effort to be home on  time to see it. They are confined to their homes and waiting for Ramayan  to start. I am sure my father is  looking down and smiling. I am sure he never imagined that his Ramayan would return to the nation’s homes so many years after it was telecast.”

Is the Sagar family watching Ramayan again? “Oh yes!” enthuses Moti. “And I will tell you one thing. It feels like I am watching a fresh serial. The beauty  of  timeless epics like the Ramayan and Bhagvat Gita is that they are open to a new interpretation every time we return to them. Today, when I see Ramayan again, I realize there are many nuances and relevances that I missed the first time. I hope the younger generation will watch the Ramayan.”
