Kapil Sharma’s show to go audience-less

Says a source in the know, “Why not? Since the Corona virus struck the world, the most popular talk show hosts of America like Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen Degeneres gave adopted a no-audience format. They’re even recording their shows from their homes. Kapil is likely to follow this novel way of beating the Corona.”

It was announced earlier during the month that Kapil’s show was cancelled indefinitely. But shooting it at home without an audience is an excellent option. After all a funny man is a funny man anywhere and everywhere. God knows we need the laughs in our lives right now.

Coronavirus survivor Purab Kohli speaks on the recipe of beating the virus

On Tuesday the nation woke up to the shocking announcement from actor Purab Kohli who now lives in London, that Purab and his entire family were tested positive for the Corona virus. Having known Purab for years, I immediately got in touch with him and he seemed pretty calm. Speaking exclusively to this writer Purab said, “I was a bit overwhelmed with messages yesterday after I put up my post about what we went through. It wasn’t as bad as it sounds. We are all well and much much better now.”

Coronavirus survivor Purab Kohli speaks on the recipe of beating the virus

Going back to recount when it all started Purab says, “It felt like a regular flu, Subhash, and I didn’t believe we had it until we started talking to the GP (general practitioner) which was on day 6 and we found out that someone we knew and were in contact with got serious with the infection and taken to hospital. By then I was already better.”

While Purab and the kids had it mild his British wife Lucy was more intensely infected. “My wife was hit little harder and was feeling low even on day eight. So those couple of days it was a little worrying, but once she went into a full rest, she fought it off and recovered too.”

The children who were mildly affected have also recovered. And Purab is waiting at home for the virus to exit. What is Purab’s advice for the infected? “I’m not a doctor. But whatever we did was very basic and organic. Haldi, ginger honey mixtures to soothe the throat. My wife was hit a little harder by the virus. I gave her kadha (homemade throat and lung beverage) home remedies that my mother gave us when we had fever during childhood. The idea is to give the body as much rest as possible. Because this virus can really sap your energy. My wife felt drained out until the ninth day of the infection while I was weak until the seventh day. You could also have difficulty breathing while sleeping. A hotwater bottle on the chest really helps. Besides these simple remedies just stay calm don’t panic and take lots of rest.”

"First my father then I became the face of Hanuman; Arun Govil was not the first choice for Rama" – Vindu Dara Singh

The legendary Dara Singh’s son Vindu Dara Singh tells an interesting story on how his father became the screen-face of Lord Hanuman. “It didn’t start with Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. That came much later. In 1976 the very reputed director Chandrakant made a feature film called Bajrang Bali where he cast my father as Hanuman. The film was a blockbuster, something as big as Jai Santoshi Maa, and my father became a household name as Pavan Putra Hanuman.”

11 years later Ramayan happened. “Papaji, as we all called the kind Ramanand Sagarji decided to make the Ramayan. Though Dipika Chikhalia was the first choice for Sita, Arun Govil was not the original choice for Rama. Papaji had someone else in mind for Rama. Arun Govilji was supposed to play some other role. But he insisted he would play Rama. Papaji had a dream one night where he saw my father as Hanuman. Dad was summoned and offered the role. Of course he had no choice. No one said no to Papaji. And of course Dad was still fit enough to play Hanuman. But he was 60 and after years of wrestling his knees and shoulders had begun to trouble him. But Papaji insisted and my father had no choice but to play Hanuman.”

Ramayan made Dara Singh the face of Hanuman. Recalls Vindu, “It was my father until he was alive and then it was me. I was first offered the role of Hanuman in the serial Jai Veer Hanuman in in 1996. I was hesitant about slipping into a role patented by my father. But I took up the challenge. Now I am invited to the Rama Leela in Delhi every year to play Hanuman. My most memorable moment on stage as Hanuman was when the PM Modiji put a tikka on my head before my performance. My best stint as Hanuman was in a Telugu film directed by the legendary Bapu.”

More than anything, Vindu is happy for the Sagars that Ramayan worked so well. “I remember as a child I’d go to visit one of Papaji (Ramanand Sagar)’s grandchildren Jyoti. They had fallen on bad days after some of their feature film like Romance and Bhagavat flopped. Ramayan put the Sagars back on the map. Everyone connected with the serial became successful. Ramayan was blessed. My father later played Hanuman just one more time in B R Chopra’s Mahabharat. But very briefly.”

Sooryavanshi and ’83 to get a proper theatrical release; would NOT go the direct-to-OTT way

If things were normal, then Akshay Kumar-starrer and Rohit Shetty-directed Sooryavanshi would have playing successfully in cinemas and moviegoers would have been gearing up for the release of Ranveer Singh’s exciting sports flick ’83. Sadly, the release of both the films has been indefinitely postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. No one can predict when these and other films would start releasing in theatres as no one exactly knows when things would return to normalcy.

Sooryavanshi and ’83 to get a proper theatrical release; would NOT go the direct-to-OTT way

Meanwhile, Angrezi Medium, starring Irrfan Khan, ran in theatres for barely 4-5 days that too in select regions of the country after which cinema theatres were asked to shut operations due to the Pandemic scare. The hope was that it would re-release after theatres are thrown open. However, the film was released on an OTT platform few days ago. Although it was understandable that biggies like Sooryavanshi and ’83 would not go the direct-to-OTT release, the question did arise in the minds of few. Reliance Entertainment Group CEO, Shibasish Sarkar, in a webinar comprising of some important personalities in the field of production and exhibition, made it clear that there’s no way these highly awaited films would come straight on the internet. Later, in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, he confirmed, “As per the situation right now, we foresee that even if the normalcy takes another 3-6 months of time, we are mentally clear that we want to give both the films a proper theatrical release.”

India thankfully has not seen the disease spread the way it did in Italy, Spain, USA etc. where the medical system is literally collapsing due to the overflow of cases. Even if things get better in India, it is said that it’ll take much longer for these countries to get back on their feet. However, when asked at the webinar if he was looking at a theatrical release in India but a release on a web streaming giant overseas for Sooryavanshi and ’83, Shibasish Sarkar categorically denied that a scenario like this would emerge. Later, he told this writer, “We would wait for normalcy to return not just in India but the main global markets as well like North America, Middle East and UK. There has to be some semblance of normalcy in these territories. Until then, we’ll hold the film’s theatrical release.”

At the webinar, Shibasish made an interesting point that grabbed everyone’s attention that Reliance team is ready to battle even if the lockdown goes on till September. He also emphasized that everyone associated with entertainment industry have to join each other’s hands in order to emerge victorious later on.

Shatrughan Sinha Not answering a question on Ramayan doesn't disqualify Sonakshi Sinha from being a good Hindu

However, Shatrughan Sinha is proud of the fact that he is named after a character in the Ramayan and that his brothers are also named after Rama and his brothers in Ramayan. His twin sons are named Luv and Kush.

However, this doesn’t mean he expects his children to be constantly living their lives out of the holy scriptures. Without naming Mukesh Khanna for berating Sonakshi on her inability to answer a question on the Ramayan on Kaun Banega Crorepati, the protective father says, “I believe someone has problem with Sonakshi not answering a question on the Ramayan. Firstly what qualifies this person to be an expert on all things to do with the Ramayan? And who has appointed him the guardian of the Hindu religion?”

Shatruji says he is a proud father. “I am very proud of all my three children. Sonakshi became a star on her own. I never had to launch her career. She is a daughter any father would be proud to have. Not answering a question on the Ramayan doesn’t disqualify Sonakshi from being a good Hindu. She doesn’t need a certificate of approval from anyone.”
