Guess who was Irrfan Khan’s favourite co-star?

Irrfan Khan loved working with Deepika Padukone in Piku. But she was not his favourite co-star. His favourite was another very tall and beautiful actress Tabu. Irrfan felt a special bonding with her ever since they worked together in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Maqbool. Irrfan Khan considers Tabu to be his finest co-star and the one that he likes sharing screen space with the most.

Guess who was Irrfan Khan's favourite co-star?

He also did extraordinary intense and passionate love-making scenes with Tabu in both Maqbool and The Namesake and was looking to complete his intense/passionate films with the actress. Ever since he got to share some extraordinarily intimate moments with Tabu in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Maqbool and Mira Nair’s The Namesake, Irrfan has been pining to complete his trilogy of romantic films with his favourite actress.

Alas, the films that Irrfan did with Tabu after Maqbool and The Namesake had no scope for any intimacy between them. Irrfan did three films with Tabu after Maqbool and The Namesake. But in Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi he had not a single shot with Tabu. In Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider also Irrfan shares no screen space with Tabu. In Meghna Gulzar’s Talvar where Irrfan plays a police officer investigating the death of a young girl Tabu plays Irrfan’s wife for exactly three minutes.

Irrfan had regretfully told me once, “I really want to do one more intense film with Tabu after Maqbool and The Namesake to complete our trilogy of passionate films.”

“The rivalry with Irrfan Khan bhai was media made” – Nawazuddin Siddiqui

They were known in recent times as the arch-rivals of Good Cinema, a male version of the famous Shabana Azmi – Smita Patil rivalry. But Nawazuddin Siddiqui, heartbroken in quarantine to hear of Irrfan Khan’s death, says he can’t understand where the rivalry stories came from.

“The rivalry with Irrfan Khan bhai was media made” - Nawazuddin Siddiqui

“Irrfan Bhai was my mentor. He was like an elder brother, and he remained one till the end. People seem to think we came together for The Lunchbox. But our relationship went back a long way. In 2000 Irrfan Bhai directed me in an hour-long film titled Alvida. It is one of my best films. I wonder why he never directed after that. Because Irrfan Bhai had the clear-headed focus of a born director.”

Their association goes back a long way. Says Nawaz, “We also worked together in a short film called Bypass which had Asif Kapdia (who directed Irrfan Bhai in Warrior) as a producer, and then in 2013 in a film called Meridian Line. Working with Irrfan Bhai was always a pleasure. I considered him my mentor my elder brother. This relationship of respect remained unchanged until his death, although during The Lunchbox we were made out to be rivals.”

Nawaz says that was highly embarrassing for him. “I always looked up to him as a mentor. To be pitched against him as a rival was not right. Luckily it didn’t affect our personal equation. I continued to be in touch with him during his illness. His end has left me shocked about the uncertainty of life. I’ll always cherish Irrfan Bhai as a human being and an actor. He was beyond brilliant in Haasil, The Namesake and Maqbool. He never seemed to act. You never caught him out acting. He had such a long way to go. Why did this have to happen to him? I’ve seen my sister suffer and die of cancer. I know what it does to the entire family. I wish Irrfan Bhai peace in heaven and his family the strength to carry on. I will miss him.”

5 Unknown facts about Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan never got a chance to write his memoirs. If he had done so it would have been fascinating. Irrfan very literally, never lied. This is not the same as those truth-swearing braggarts who keep saying they never lie to convince themselves more than anyone else. Irrfan was brutally honest. And this quality showed up in his work. It also reflected in his life, and his workplace attitude. Here are some incidents from his life that showed up his honesty.

5 Unknown facts about Irrfan Khan

1. Maiden project: Irrfan made one of his maiden appearances in Govind Nihalani’s most unusual marital drama Drishti where Irrfan played Dimple Kapadia’s husband Shekhar Kapur’s nephew who has an affair with her. Irrfan had to do a long intimate lovemaking sequence with Dimple, and he was petrified that he would touch in the wrong places. Dimple put him at ease. Women were always a guiding force in Irrfan’s life.

2. Always A Warrior: Indie director Asif Kapadia, better known for his documentaries on Amy Winehouse and Maradona, directed Irrfan in his first international breakthrough film way back in 2001. The film Warriorgot disqualified from the Oscars’ shortlist for the Best Foreign Film from Britain because the language was Hindi. Irrfan couldn’t stop laughing. He could see the humour in cultural segregation.

3. Westward Chalo: Making it big in the West was never a burning ambition for Irrfan, though he did feel bad about how Indian cinema got left behind from international award every year. He once told me, “We’re yet to make inroads into the West and the way Chinese cinema is made. I mean, long before Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Bruce Lee had made an impact on the Western audience with his Enter The Dragon. Indian cinema is yet to make that kind of impact. But we’re getting there.”

4. Irrfan’s Favourite Director: Hands Down it was Mira Nair. She not only introduced him to the screen in Salaam Bombay, she then made him an international star in The Namesake. Very few know he played the lead opposite the very attractive and successful Natalie Portman in a Gujju-Jew short film Kosher Vegetarian directed by Mira Nair. Irrfan and Natalie remained friends even after the shooting was over.

5. Irrfan, no Khan: Irrfan dropped his surname after being subjected to Islamaphobic surveillance in the US. He told me, “It happened to me on two occasions. I was detained in New York and Los Angeles airport for secondary interrogation. I was outraged. I was told to quietly come into a room for questioning and identification verification. I wasn’t allowed to talk. When I tried to ask why I was being treated this way, I was told to keep quiet. I wasn’t allowed to use my phone. They said, ‘No, you just sit down.’ All because my name was Irrfan Khan. You can’t argue or rationalize.” Surname or no name, Irrfan remained the most talented Khan in Bollywood.

Nikkhil Advani reveals Rishi Kapoor hugged Irrfan Khan after watching his performance in D-Day

Tributes from around the world poured in for the late actors. Nikkhil Advani, who made D-Day, recalled the time when veteran actor Rishi Kapoor was left amazed by Irrfan Khan’s performance. He said that Irrfan quizzed him about how he could make a film like D-Day after making a Kal Ho Na Ho. Then, the filmmaker approached Sudhir Mishra and Anurag Kashyap to talk to Irrfan about the film since the actor wasn’t sure whether Advani would keep the things as raw as it was on paper. Another query the actor had was whether the filmmaker would put songs in the film or not.

Speaking to a daily, Nikkhil further said that Irrfan was a phenomenal actor. He said that they were filming his last moment in the film when he calls up his son. The actor did his own interpretation and Rishi Kapoor was left surprised with the performance! The actor got up and hugged Irrfan and said that he couldn’t believe what he had done. Nikkhil also said that Irrfan had pointed out that the filmmaker had okayed everyone’s take except his. He told Irrfan that he didn’t deserve to weigh his performance.

D-Day was a story about a team of experts dispatched to bring in The Most Wanted Man to India and almost achieve the unthinkable … until something goes horribly wrong.

The film stars Arjun Rampal, Huma Qureshi, Irrfan Khan, Shruti Haasan and Rishi Kapoor in prominent roles.
